What’s in Your Crate curated by Yasmeenah

Multidisciplinary artist and DJ Yasmeenah invites local DJs Sci-Fi, D. Untethered, and ech0astral to the stage to get to know one another through their respective music collections. As the evening gives way to dusk, they spin songs in response to questions and conversation. What song would they play if they were stuck on an island? What song is their favorite but doesn’t translate well on the dance floor? Get to know these DJs and find out about their relationship to music.

Bios
A first-generation Somali American DJ, curator, and arts & culture organizer based in south Minneapolis, the ethereal and joyous Yasmeenah is a multidisciplinary creative. She is not afraid to reflect the times, while prioritizing Black joy and celebration on the continuous path toward liberation. She has garnered international praise and attention through her DJ sets in support of Rina Sawayma, DJ Minx, Ash Lauryn, Kush Jones, and many others. Yasmeenah has curated exhibits for Hennepin Theatre Trust and Franconia Sculpture Park, and is also the cofounder of TimeCapsule, a virtually curated print zine and exhibit that uplifts Black and Queer futures. Yasmeenah lives and examines the intersections of creation, music, queerness, and Blackness as she believes art is essential for radical movements.

Sci-Fi (she/they) is a DJ and part-time rapper from St. Paul, who has been performing since 2016. She’s been behind events like “Adventures In Space-Time” at Acadia, as well as “UMM HELLO!?” and “FUNKTION” at the Uptown VFW.

D. Untethered is from northwest Ohio and lives in Minneapolis. They are a mental health worker, community organizer, and DJ with Decadance at the VFW. Their favorite project is the People’s Sound System and they use it often to amplify voices of activists and provide public-facing, free music events for community members. Their musical background is in jazz drum, hip-hop, and funk, and in recent years has been collecting more house and techno.

ech0astral is Julian Green’s DJ alias. He prefers to DJ in his bedroom for his SoundCloud mix series, but will do it for an IRL crowd at the right event. As ech0astral, he focuses on blending electronic music with hip-hop and R&B to create energetic, unique mixes that merge his influences into something wholly new. Green founded Radio K’s hip-hop stream The Vanguard in 2020, and is currently the content director of Carbon Sound, a new platform dedicated to highlighting Black music’s role in the American musical canon built in collaboration between The Current and KMOJ.
