Real Girl

Real Girl is the moniker of Minneapolis based disc jockey Josie Simon, a high energy selector whose sets span numerous genres and styles. Josie began deejaying in 2018 when she was a student at Oberlin College, influenced both by the In Training parties in nearby Cleveland, and by the party-throwers that started to graduate and leave a void on campus that she happily filled alongside fellow burgeoning DJ’s. Moving back to Minnesota at the start of 2020, she worked quickly to enmesh herself in the existing underground music scenes, eager to bring her wild energy to dance floors across the Twin Cities.

As a DJ, Real Girl has been known to describe herself as an “energy succubus,” feeding off of the energy that she stokes in her crowds. Before she was a DJ she was a dancefloor gremlin and speaker freaker; evidenced by the way she’s never still behind the decks, preferring to move with the dancers to determine where musically to go next. Her deejay motto is “Play the right thing at the right time,” which, as a multi-genre selector, results in her sets being unpredictable and sometimes a sonic 180 from the last time you saw her spin. A typical Real Girl set could be anything from a funk and disco driven bonanza to a total techno tirade. The only way to find out which is to show up and move with her!

She is currently a resident DJ of St. Paul based funk party Jumpsuit and a member of fledgling DJ collective Pivot.
