Mia and Mafic Ocean present Dark Visions, an evening of music, discussion, and art-making inspired by the exhibition of the same name. While the exhibition celebrates the macabre works of renowned artists like Piranesi, Goya, and Blake, the event features contemporary musicians, thinkers, and makers who play with similar grim thrills in their work. Attendees will explore the chthonic depths of Dark Visions for a night of dark, sublime entertainment.
Music Performances:
Embalming Eva – Moody synth duo Embalming Eva, from Duluth, MN, is one of the most exciting groups in their genre right now. Their stunning electronic compositions, shimmering vocals, and dark themes complement the evening's exploration of the sublime. 8:00 PM
IOSIS & Jacqueline Ultan – In a special collaboration, ambient/noise composer IOSIS (Alex Bissen) and master cellist Jacqueline Ultan will perform an improvisational set in Regis Court. Through hardware synthesis, cello will be transformed to produce gnarled soundscapes and lush atmospherics. 6:20 PM
Workshops and Discussions:
Liberation Swathed in Black: Dark Art, Horror, and The Unconscious – Held in Mia’s Studio, Psychoanalyst Joshua Goodwin will explore the connections between desire, horror, and the unconscious, drawing on the psychoanalytic theories of Jacques Lacan. This discussion delves into the psychological elements of the gothic, examining how horror and fantasy intersect with human desire and emotion. 5:20 PM
Gothic Flower Press Workshop - Join Kate Santella (Roe Floral) in a physical representation of gothic arts fascination with beauty, decay, and fleeting nature. In this workshop participants will assemble their own flower press and preserve first layers of flora and foliage, spinning life into delicate everlastings. 6:00 PM
