So much for the war on drugs . . .

So what if they are prescriptions, what the hell does this teach children? When you have a problem just take some drugs and it will go away.

it says to our kids that it is perfectly fine to take drugs that our government can tax. it also says that we'd rather just sedate these kids than figure out a way to reach them.

i JUST had this conversation with a family memeber. She like to mask EVERYTHING with a pill. I can understand when out parents died but now it's like "come on, life goes on"
She takes a pill if she is having a bad hair day.
a message to people:
WE ARE ALL MEANT TO BE SAD SOMETIMES
quit masking shit with a pill.
OH GOD, i could go into WAY to many branches of this topic.
i am going to stop now.

It's so funny you brought this up, Ryan! I was sorta thinking about this while I was going to sleep last night after staring at the stupid "Are children prescribed too many psychiatric drugs?" poll on AOL. I think it all starts with FLINTSTONES CHEWABLES! Okay, maybe not. But I think in general our society tells kids:
"Got a problem? Pop a government approved pill. But whatever you do don't take a pill the gov't doesn't approve. Don't do drugs kids...... the bad ones that is. Take the good ones we tell you to take."
I take 16 pills, and I'm fine LOL

I think that you make a very good point here. I dont know that much about perscription drugs but in my ovservations there seems to be a pill for everything (headaches, sleeping, emotion, birth to name a few) My sister has BI-Polar, and is on quite a bit of medication, and she now has this idea that pills can take care of everything. I think that is absurd. People should learn how to treat their emotions, and not think that drugs will do it for them.

Did anyone else hear how the pilots that accidentalu bombed the Canadian troops in Afghanistan were on amphetamines given to them by their commanders? Hopefully it's not as bad as it sounds and our troops don't leave the military addicted to speed.

its not really addicting, the high is differnt, and I suspect those guys wernt on enough to get a high from it. But if the body gets used to it, there will be a withdrawl period.
*I'm talking about ritalin and drugs like that

well, if she is truely bi-polar then i think she should be medicated. atleast for awhile because thats more than just "not feeling good today." she should probably be seeing a psychiatrist too.

The military has been doing that forever though.
In Vietnam, the CIA worked with the Army to develop Dexedrine and incorporate it into meal rations because it increases alertness and depth perception in lowlevel light. Then, when it became a disco drug in the late 70's, it was put on the schedule 1 list. A decade later, when someone realized that you could treat ADHD with it, it became available in prescription form.
Whatever they're giving pilots these days probably isn't hardcore at all. Just enough to keep you sharp so that you don't cost them a $50 million dollar airplane.

It's funny that when they find a drug useful it's okay, but when the public finds it can be used for leisure it becomes a illegal. The govt is so hypocritical.

Glad to see your adding somthing to this discussion..
One of my close friends in high skool, was on Ritalin, etc. Since he was 5. He decided about 2 years ago to take himself off it. He's just fine now, i really haven't noticed a huge difference. If nothing else he has 10 times the self control he did before this..
People are to eager to throw pills at things.. for sure, he still has about 5-6 different kinds of assorted ADHD related meds lying around his place, it's rediculous that they had a 5 year old on that much shit.
He's 19 now.. i just wonder if it effected any part of his childhood in a major way?

I go through caffeine withdrawls.
Everyonce in awhile I will buy a can of coke and, as soon as it hits my mouth,my brain chirps back up and is "high" for a bit.

I was put on Ritalin during junior high, and after taking it for about a year I decided it was doing more harm than good and refused to keep taking it. I have been fine every since.

No one can say that a percentage of the people / children or whatever w/ presciptions (sp?) for all these miracle pills dont really need them.
Or that they would be able to live normally w/o them.
But it really should be a first step? to a better recovery system. Teach them not to need it.
My mother tried to get my on several anti-depressants a while back. And i refused. I got on a strict schedule, excersize regularly, etc. and it turned it self around in about 2 months, granted it's different then ADD / ADHD but my shrink was all ready to write out the Rx . And my mom was so sure it was the only way i could ever get better. riiiiight
A more extensive treatment, and a much more intensive diagnosis are what i say should be done..
